Expertise Summary
In our laboratory we perform studies on the organization of the maize genome, homologous meiotic recombination, transposon genetics, and the uses of transposons in functional genomics.

IMPACTS: . 1. Discovery that the organization of the maize genome is highly polymorphic, so that the DNA of different maize lines can vary by >50% because of differences in intergenic retrotransposons and in genes or gene fragments carried by helitron transposons. 2. Discovery that local rates of recombination in maize can vary greatly as a consequence of these large structural polymorphisms. 3. Development of a transgenic Ac-Ds transposon tagging resource in maize.
