| Expertise Summary |
| My primary research focus is on the enzymes that break down proteins (proteases) and compounds that inhibit specific proteases (protease inhibitors) and the mechanisms by which they regulate the many biological and pathological processes (blood clotting, digestion, growth, metabolism, tissue remodeling, infection, cancer). Interests include: The role of proteases and their inhibitors in health and disease and in the intracellular removal of normal and abnormal proteins in physiological and pathological states Effect of antioxidants, reactive oxygen species, and environmental factors in heart disease, cancer, infection, and other pathological conditions in animals and humans and on the survival of animal species Utilizing proteases and their inhibitors as targets for the development of new drug treatments |
