Expertise Summary
Research and teaching emphasis is on the quantitative, comparative, and descriptive epidemiology of plant diseases. Studies are conducted on both polycyclic and monocyclic aspects of epidemics, with special focus on stone fruit pathosystems. The influence of abiotic environmental factors on disease development, and the creation of computer models from these quantitative relationships, is a major thrust of the basic research program. Research is also being conducted on the integration of biological and biorational control agents into standard disease managements programs. Applied disease management experiments, utilizing the results of the epidemiological research, seek to reduce pesticide use, maximize disease control, and augment profit for commercial growers. Outreach efforts are coordinated with agricultural extension agents to achieve timely and efficient delivery of results.
