Expertise Summary
The use and management of turfgrasses to enhance the environment for human activity, particularly in regions that have large metropolitan centers, continues to be a growing industry. The turfgrass management program at Rutgers concentrates on two areas of turfgrass science and management involving the evaluation of turfgrass germplasm for adaptation to New Jersey and the development of best management practices. We evaluate new and existing turfgrass germplasm for adaptation to the soils and climate of New Jersey. Identifying germplasm with improved traffic tolerance and lower maintenance characteristics is of particular importance. Another area of emphasis is the development of best management practices that improve stress tolerance of turf and promote environmental stewardship. In particular, we are studying conditions associated with improved soil health, and subsequently enhanced turf performance. We have demonstrated that various soil management techniques can be useful in achieving these goals.
